Placing a piece of mesh net (or recycled onion net) covered with a 1-inch layer of coarse volcanic clay or pebbles at the pot base keeps soil contained while allowing free water exit.

Step-by-Step Drainage Layer Protocol

  1. Cover Drain Hole: Cut a small square of plastic mesh or mesh netting and lay it directly over the bottom pot hole to block soil leakage.

  2. Add Coarse Base Layer: Pour a 1-to-2-inch layer of expanded clay pebbles (leca), coarse pumice, or gravel over the net to form an open air pocket.
